A different grill dinner in Jimbaran

Rayjin Sidewalk Jimbaran

A Jimbaran dinner usually means grilled seafood at tables on the sand at Jimbaran Bay. Rayjin Jimbaran offers another kind of grill dinner: indoors and air-conditioned, with a chef cooking on an iron plate in front of you and Japanese flavours on the plate. It stays a reliable choice through Bali’s wet season, roughly November to March, when beach tables are often rained out. Families like it for practical reasons too, since restrooms, an elevator and a children’s play area are all in the same building.

What to expect inside

Rayjin Sidewalk Jimbaran

Rayjin sits in a quieter corner of the mall, and once you are seated, the mall disappears. The dining room is dark and modern, built around a long counter facing the teppan. The energy comes from the kitchen: flames rising off the plate, the sound of knives on the board, and the team calling out in Japanese as guests arrive and dishes go out.

“A lot of our Jimbaran guests arrive after a long day around Uluwatu, so we keep the menu easy to share and quick off the grill. The dish I recommend most here is the Gindara Misozuke. The miso marinade caramelises on the teppan while the fish stays soft and buttery. For guests who want a simpler meal, the teishoku sets give you a complete Japanese set meal for one person.” Chef, Rayjin Jimbaran

The flame show comes with dishes grilled on the teppan, and the diced steaks are the ones guests film most. Fried starters, sushi and ramen come from the kitchen. To watch the cooking, order at least one teppan dish and ask for a counter seat when you book.

Teishoku sets are a Jimbaran exclusive. Teishoku is a Japanese set meal built around one main dish. The options are Chicken Teriyaki and Chicken Nanban (Rp 120,000), Beef Yakiniku (Rp 160,000), Creamy Garlic Beef (Rp 165,000), Gindara Miso (Rp 175,000), Tonkotsu Pork Ramen and Tonkotsu Chicken Karaage Ramen (Rp 198,000), and Salmon Teriyaki (Rp 220,000). A teishoku suits a solo diner or a quick lunch better than a spread of sharing plates.

The menu also has sushi rolls from Rp 80,000 to Rp 180,000 and three kinds of ramen from Rp 100,000 to Rp 120,000. To drink, Rayjin serves sake, wine and Japanese-inspired cocktails.

How much does dinner cost?

Menu prices are listed in thousands of rupiah, so “135” means Rp 135,000. A 7% service charge and 10% government tax are added, which comes to roughly 18% on top of the menu total.

A shared dinner for four: two Tuna Avocado Nori Tacos, Pork Gyoza, Gindara Misozuke, the Meltique Steak, Chicken Nanban, Salmon Fried Rice and a 200 g Garlic Rice. That is Rp 892,000 on the menu, or about Rp 1,050,000 after service and tax, around Rp 262,000 per person before drinks. A Chicken Nanban teishoku for one comes to about Rp 141,000 all in.

Teppanyaki at the five-star resorts in nearby Nusa Dua starts at around Rp 400,000 per plate or set before tax, which makes Rayjin the more affordable teppanyaki option in South Bali.

Dinner after a day in Uluwatu

Many visitors spend the afternoon on the Bukit Peninsula at the beaches, Uluwatu Temple or the Kecak fire dance at sunset. Sidewalk Jimbaran sits on Jl. Raya Uluwatu, the main road between Uluwatu and Jimbaran, so Rayjin is on the way back.

Traffic on Jl. Raya Uluwatu is usually slow after sunset, so book your table for well after the performance ends. The restaurant closes at 10 PM and last orders are earlier, so plan to be seated by 8:30 PM. Hotels such as Four Points by Sheraton Jimbaran, Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran and Le Méridien Bali Jimbaran are a few minutes’ drive away, and GWK Cultural Park is close by.

Dinner with children

Rayjin Jimbaran is often recommended as one of Bali’s more family-friendly Japanese restaurants, and the mall setting helps. Sidewalk Jimbaran has a children’s play area, clean restrooms, elevator access and a Cinépolis cinema on the top floor. Children usually love watching the grill. Keep them seated during the flame cooking, because the teppan is extremely hot. The popcorn-style fried shrimp that some guides mention is served at Rayjin Ubud, not Jimbaran. Here, the nori tacos and Chicken Nanban are the easiest dishes for younger diners.
